Small Midcentury Original Table Lamp /Night Light in Glass with Nickeled Clips
About the Item
Original modernist rectangular cube night light / small table lamp comprising 8 cut-glass square panels in two tiers formed together with original nickeled bronze brackets and raised on tubular nickeled feet. The juxtaposition of the circular patterns in the glass amidst the overall architectural shape creates a striking harmony.
The glass is clear in color. The variance seen in the photos are due to the camera flash.
Holds one Edison based bulb, can accommodate either LED or incandescent bulbs.
Due to periods of historic turmoil, a lot of the glass designers worked for multiple lighting manufacturers. Entire sections of countries were annexed by adjoining countries. Borders changed. Czechoslovakia was under German occupation and rule. After the war, from 1948-1990, it became part of the Eastern Bloc. As a socialist and satellite state of the Soviet Union, it had an economy of command where rules, production … were determined and set by the government.
In 1958, Czechoslovakia exhibited in the Brussels World Fair and gained world -wide attention for using modern materials of steel, glass and plastic. The country even won the main and several other prizes for its lights. This new style of lighting became known as the Brussels style, a symbol of the golden decade of progress, reform and political liberation. But in 1968, the Warsaw Pact consisting of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary invaded with the intention to forcibly halt the reforms. East Germany canceled and pulled out of the pact hours before the operation.
Very good condition, newly wired for U.S. specs.
Slight abrasions, barely visible pitting / wear on nickeled hardware clips commensurate with age.
Can be used on a console in a hallway, as a table light, in an entry foyer, a child's bedroom, study, on a bedroom night table, or anywhere just a glow or a full illumination is desired.
