Moorish Table Lamps

MOORISH STYLE

After the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century, Islamic Spain became a cultural mix of influences that shaped both private homes and religious spaces. Moorish design was the name given to this style, which evolved through the 15th century with vibrant tile work, horseshoe arches and lavish ornamentation, most visible at sites such as Granada’s Alhambra and the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. Moorish furniture was often similarly ornate, and featured pieces inlaid with wood, ivory and bone.

When European designers began studying Moorish art and architecture in the early 19th century, it led to a Moorish Revival. Appropriating the style’s decorative flourishes and architectural elements, it promoted a romantic view of Islamic design. Travelers could bring home a memento of what they witnessed in the Middle East, a trend that aligned with a fad for themed interiors. Men’s smoking rooms arranged with ottomans, divans and settees and inlaid tables were especially popular, as were cafés where coffee was served amid bead curtains and colorful floor mats. (Handwoven rugs are a centerpiece of Moorish interiors.) Octagonal rooms with domed ceilings were created for wealthy homes, frequently with furnishings like pipe stands, filigree plasterwork and arched doorways. The horseshoe arch is an iconic attribute of Moorish architecture that, in addition to Spain, can be found in Sicily, Morocco and elsewhere.

Several late 19th to early 20th-century movements featured Moorish touches. The American and English Aesthetic Movement, for example, borrowed liberally from global decorating styles, as seen in furniture designed by Lockwood de Forest, a New York-born artist who mixed Eastern and Western forms. The visual vocabulary of Art Nouveau also references the elegant use of geometry in Moorish design, with Milanese Art Nouveau furniture designer Carlo Bugatti drawing inspiration from the style. The Arts and Crafts movement, which prized expressive yet simple design, incorporated Moorish influences; hand-painted furniture and tile work created by William De Morgan, a British designer and potter who made furnishings for the likes of Morris & Co., were informed by techniques from Moorish Spain.

Ivory and Tan Porcelain Hexagon Shaped Hand Painted Vintage Table Lamp
Located in Lomita, CA
The hexagon shape and the elegant design of floral and botannical elements make this lamp a standout on a white background. The lamp is in beautiful condition without condition issues. The hexagon shape is architectural and the lamp makes a dramatic statement with its simple dual tones. The hand painting includes flower faces, boughs and vines in a gold and tan tone. The design is reminiscent of earthenware containers and jars used to store drugs and herbs known as Albarelli. These jars were used to hold medicines and other powders and became popular in Italian apothecaries in the middle ages. The indivudual designs helped the chemist...

It’s going to be lovely on a side or end table in your sitting room, on a sofa table in your living room, or on an accent table in your bedroom. Frederick Cooper, an artist from Chicago established a studio to create gorgeous sculptures and watercolor paintings in 1923. He was also drawn to the still fairly new invention of lamps. Mixing such materials as brass, fabric, glass, and wood, he created exquisitely designed lamps that complimented the quick innovations in American architecture. The heritage continues today. They use fine materials such as brass, bronze, copper, nickel, marble, jade, and alabaster. They also create art glazed ceramics, hand decorated porcelains, and crystals. They refer to their designs and creations as “illuminated art.” Including design collaborations with Larry Laslo, Maria Buatta, Alexander Julian...

Orientalist Austrian Cold Painted Bronze Lamp w/ 2 Figures Inside a Small Room
Located in Petaluma, CA
This charming little scene depicted here is so colorful and detailed that it could only have been executed by the premier maker of these bronzes, Franz Bergmann. It does bear his signature with the letter "B" inside an urn. What makes this so extra special is its diminutive size. Normally these smaller examples lack the quality of work that is seen here. The fact that it is a lamp is always a bonus and lit up at night in your home can only bring warmth and joy to the owner. The curtain is so crisply cast that it almost looks like fabric. It's all done with such attention to detail. A great example of an antique Vienna bronze lamp.
