Table Totem Lamp by Bernard Rooke with Original Shade, England 1960s

About the Item

Large ceramic totem table lamp by Bernard Rooke, England, 1960s. A sculptural piece, made up of three ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone, with a combination of dry and glazed finishes and blue glass detail. The piece is unsigned, as was typical for early works. The ceramic is in good vintage condition, with occasional flaws in line with the making and firing process and some overall asymmetry in the hand-built stack. See notes below on the shade and wiring. Shade: The original shade - quite unusual to see - is in distressed vintage condition. There are losses to the raffia, marks, dents and distortion to the shape; however for us the shade has charm and works well with the lamp. The shade is fitted through an original duplex carrier (image 10). The lamp can be shipped with or without the shade, as you wish, and shipping will be adjusted accordingly. Wiring: New wiring will be required and we advise this is carried out in the country of install, to ensure it meets your local needs and regulations. The lamp currently takes a single standard bayonet-fitting bulb, and is switched on the lamp-holder; the wire leaves the base on the side (old wiring has been removed for shipping). We recommend the use of low heat bulbs to protect this piece for the future. Approximate dimensions: H: 42cm to top of ceramic or 79cm including shade as shown in image 1 W: 18cm ant base and 34cm at shade D: 12cm at base and 34cm at shade Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke Early pieces were hand-formed using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

  • Large Bernard Rooke Table or Floor Lamp with Original Shade
    By Bernard Rooke
    Located in London, GB
A monumental and unusual lamp by British potter, Bernard Rooke. An early piece, probably dating from the 1960s, and initialled BR on the side. Large-scale single-piece Rooke lamps are rare to see - kiln size often a limiting-factor - particularly with an original shade. The base is hand-built, with the lower section finished in a glaze of green/grey. The upper part is glazed showing natural terracotta tones and features raised patterns and piercing, finishing in pierced loops at the top. Both the base and shade are in good original condition, with normal wear from age and use and the hand-making process. A firing crack to the interior flat section of the base appears stable, and is not visible in use. Wiring: The original wiring has been removed and will need to be replaced in the country of install to meet local needs. The lamp-holder takes a bayonet-fitting bulb and we recommend low-heat models to protect this piece for the future. Shade: The lamp has its original shade, which is rare, and this one is an unusual size for Rooke designs. Overall it has retained pretty good shape, with a little "ovalling", minor marks and occasional short crack to the liner. The fitting is a duplex...
