Fine French Neoclassical Giltwood Antique Pier Trumeau Mirror, 19th Century

About the Item

A substantial and impressive piece, this very fine French neoclassical trumeau mirror is in every way a statement piece. With panels of cobalt blue against an old worn teal within borders of gilded carvings, it is a mirror that brings an air of charm and sophistication to a setting. The crest is powerful, a very large and finely carved ram’s head central, flanked by highly detailed vines with grape leaves flowing outward. The stepped crest molding is highly architectural, intended to compliment the ceiling molding of a room it is layered with two types of leafage carved in a repeating pattern beneath the molding. Bold acanthus carvings project from either upper corner over a rosette-garland. The molding throughout is textbook, symmetrically rendering most major molding repeats found in Louis XVI objects the acanthus, the laurel leaf, twisted rope carving, a fluted edge and raised beading. This frames each panel and ultimately the thick bevelled glass of the mirror. The reverse of the mirror shows a careful and methodical approach to craftsmanship, the corners of the upper joints locked together with butterfly dovetails, the entirety of the back built with excess and strength. It is an investment piece that was intended to last the test of time, a work that defines a room. This is a most excellent and infrequently found object of quality and artistry. Measurements: 63 1/4” H x 43” W x 4 3/8” D. Condition report: Some minor surface chipping and wear, some paint loss along right edge, old inactive pest damage throughout. Paint is old but probably not original. Overall remaining in excellent condition. We have additional images available upon request.
