Although sunburst motifs were seen on small convex mirrors as early as the 15th century, it was not until the reign of Louis XIV, aka The Sun King, that sunburst mirrors became larger and more flamboyant. Our large Italian giltwood sunburst mirror with wooden pendant surround was hand-carved using antique materials in Northern Italy.
Although the mirror is quite large (62 ¾ inches in diameter), the reflective surface is relatively small at 11 inches in diameter. It is encircled by a parcel painted black surround with cavetto molding. Available today, this Baroque Colonial Rectangular Sunburst mirror made in hardwood and gold leaf in Peru in the twenties is nothing less than spectacular!
This mirror is made in worked hardwood, plaster, terracotta bull and gold leaf sheets. While the style is inspired in Baroque colonial sunburst mirrors, the technique is Peruvian executed by Peruvian artisans in the 1920’s decade. This can be seen in the rich texture and gold detailing. The glass is original also.
The mirror is in its original condition and while it has some minor dents and small pieces of plaster missing (as detailed in the pictures), the piece looks spectacular and has a lot of character.
A gorgeous piece like this would look wonderful in any traditional, transitional, rustic, or even French country modern...
