Dramatic, Monumental Rococo Florentine Giltwood Mirror with Matching Planter
About the Item
This monumental, 18th century Florentine Italian carved giltwood mirror with matching floor-standing cabriole legged planter is a historical showpiece in search of a palatial home setting. The sheer size of the mirror and planter, at over 10 feet tall combined, makes for a stunning focal point in any style of interior, from eclectic antique traditional to bright Minimalist modern. The hand carved wooden frame is an explosion of golden Rococo style, with swirling interwoven acanthus leaves, scallop shell motifs and repeating fish scale border surrounding the beveled mirror. The frame and planter are in good condition for their age, with some cracks and small losses. The mirror glass is complete, with no cracks or chips, though there are a variety of small spots in the silvering.
This item is large, and needs special crating to protect it during shipment. This may increase shipping and handling time.
(A note on the photograph showing the full mirror and planter: Because of where the mirror is mounted in our gallery, it is impossible to make a picture squarely from the front. An architectural shift lens was used to achieve this frontal view, and thus there is a slight distortion to the ornamental curling acanthus at top center of mirror, as well as the planter, which seems slightly askew. Please take note of the detail photos, both mirror and planter are completely square and correct. Thank you.).

He first comes to notice in 1825, when he attended a meeting of more than fifty master carvers and gilders who resolved to resist the demands of journeymen for an increase in wages (The Times 30 June 1825). He followed Fentham & Co (qv) at 136 Strand, using the description, ‘Late Fentham & Co’, on his trade label for many years. By 1829 Froom had entered into a short-lived partnership with William Cribb (qv), which was dissolved in 1831 (London Gazette 3 May 1831). William Froom and his wife Elizabeth Anne had five children born between 1831 and 1840, christened at St Mary-le-Strand.William Froom was a customer of the composition ornament maker, George Jackson & Sons (qv), 1836-1842 (see Jackson account book, V&A Archive of Art and Design, AAD/2012/1/2/3). In the 1839 directory Froom was listed as a looking glassmaker and in the 1841 census as a plate glass manufacturer. He would appear to have retired from business in 1849 from his entries in the Post Office directory. In the 1851 census he was living in Oxford Square...Category
