Early 19th Century Swedish Neoclassical Gustavian Wall Mirror with Faux Porphyry

About the Item

A very unusual Swedish wall mirror painted in faux porphyry, the frame around the original mirror plate is painted under glass, so it looks even more like polished porphyry. Swedish porphyry was first discovered in 1731 in the valley of Älvdalen, but serious mining there was only begun some fifty years later. The Älvdalen workshop produced a wide range of neoclassical objects, like precious vases and urns in all shapes. They were highly fashionable circa 1800 and were often used as diplomatic gifts. This mirror is following the fashion for the very sought after porphyry stone, yet here it is made of painted wood and glass to imitate. A beautiful object in neoclassical taste with its original gilding and paint - fantastic patina as shown on the photographs.
