The beautiful oval of this antique gold leaf French mirror circa 1875 is wreathed with a trailing vine of grape leaves and grape clusters and was originally in a grand home in the Champagne region. The top of the antique oval mirror features a boldly sculpted cartouche featuring a lush cluster of grapes ready to be plucked for harvest along with trailing grapevines whose sensuous organic style follow the oval outline. This mirror has been made in a style known as a "pareclose" mirror which was invented in France in the seventeenth century as a method to increase the reflective area before the production of large scale mirror glass could be achieved. A pareclose mirror will always have a double frame that separates the individual plates of mirror. In this mirror the large oval mirror as well as the four individual curved mirrors that surround the oval are all original and each has a beveled edge. Both the inner and outer frames are detailed to look like actual grape vines with a bark like texture and the grape clusters and leaves appear to grow out of the frame. Set at the 12 o'clock position as well as three, six and nine, are large leaves and grapes that serve to cover the actual joining of the mirror glasses in a decorative manner. This stunning antique French mirror is quite rare because it has survived intact all these years without damage. The delicate open work of the vines give a softness and sense of nature's abundance while the great scale of the mirror ensures its ability to not only reflect an interior but be a focal point in its own right, (42" wide x 63" high.).
