Late 19th Century Gilt Wall Mirror

About the Item

A Charming Late 19th Century Giltwood & Gesso Pier Mirror Having Original Rectangular Plate Enclosed By Elegant Carved Frame Headed By Scrolling Eagles, Grotesque Figure Heads And Central Set Elegant Carved Prince Of Wales Plume Of Feathers. This mirror dates to the late 19th century, or possibly even the early 20th century, but is very much executed in the 18th century style and unlike the large majority of examples we see from the later period it is extremely well carved and boasts real elegance. The gilding has a lovely mellow finish to it, clearly it has never been heavily cleaned or over restorered and overall the condition of the entire piece is very good, with just a few old marks, scrapes and minor repairs, as one would expect for a mirror of this period. The carving is a very interesting and unusual mix of subjects, however they are all very well carved and work together well giving the mirror real elegance. Although probably originally made to hang on the brick peiers between the windows of a large room in a grand home, it is also of a sensible size meaning that it is extremely well suited to a whole host of spaces around the modern home. As with all items which we offer for sale this mirror has been inspected by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
