About the Item

A handsome Louis Philippe style gold leaf frame enclosing the original mirror glass from Belle Epoque period France c.1895. Please take a moment to use the zoom feature on our website to enlarge all the provided photographs to see the wonderful detail in this antique frame. The profile of the frame has a large central section flanked on either side by a series of smaller curved surfaces that serve to give a beautiful sense of undulation across the entire frame. In addition there is a rectangular area on each of the four sides, top, bottom, left and right, highlighted with an incised floral design with intertwining ribbons that glistens against the smoothness of the polished gold leaf. There is also an additional detail adjacent to the mirror glass near the interior of the frame that is a series of small beads known in France as "les perles". This is a wonderful motif with a meaning of utter luxury and sumptuousness given that the possession of a strand of matched natural pearls was only for the incredibly wealthy given the time and expense of collecting naturally occurring pearls The importance and value of pearls is seen especially in painting of important aristocrats where pearls are always prominently featured. A particularly important painting that demonstrates the regard in which pearls have always been held is Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" which hangs in the Mauritshuis Museum in the Hague located in the Netherlands. The frames contains the original mirror glass that possesses the wonderful allure of antique glass with its sparkle and glitter with specks and spots. The unique appearance of antique mirror glass always adds a depth to an interior impossible to achieve with new mirror.
