Pair of Syroco 'Brutalist' Mirrors
About the Item
“Syrocco" or, more correctly, "Syroco" from “Syracuse Ornamental Company” is the term applied to a moulded material resembling carved wood that they invented and first used around the 1890s. Syrocco with two c’s came to be used as a generic term for similar pieces to those made by Syroco, but not actually made by Syroco themselves.
“Syroco wood” was made by a process invented by an Austrian woodcarver, Adolph Hostein, owner of the Syracuse Ornamental Company, which he developed in the 1890s. The material is a combination of wood compound and casting fluids that were then poured into moulds resulting in a casting that looked to be hand-carved.
The Syracuse Ornamental Company became Syroco, Inc.in the 1930s. Later, other companies such as Multi Products began producing Syrocco products. The Syracuse Ornamental Company produced many products and designs, initially starting with the production of carvings to embellish coffins but then moved onto designs for the home such as ashtrays and architectural mouldings although they are probably best known for their corkscrews which are highly sought after by collectors.
Later, as demand increased, Syroco developed a technique for creating near-perfect replicas of their original carvings and designs. These moulds featured a wood grain which gave the final product an almost organic look and feel.
During the war years, demand for Syroco products dropped, but a range of novelty items kept them going which allowed them to survive until the 1950s when the company again changed direction and began manufacturing mirrors and wall decorations.
By the mid-1950s, Syroco developed a process they called “metalgold” which allowed a gilt finish on their products. The process involved depositing real metal onto the product and then finishing it by hand.
