About the Item

We actually have TWO of these beds available. Jaw dropping queen size two poster floating platform bed clad in polished brass and bronzed mirrored glass designed by O. B. Solie for Ello Furniture Manufacturing Co. from the "Regency Imperial" collection. Platform appears to float above geometric recessed brass clad base which is illuminated from below. Pair of smoked mirror clad three-sided columns crowned with capitals made of brass clad ogee crown moulding and illuminated from behind. Columns mount to three metal brackets which extend perpendicularly from the sides of the headboard, so they stand in front of the wall allowing for the backlit effect. Should you prefer not to use these columns with the bed simply detach the brackets from the headboard. Paco Rabanne Space Curtains sold separately. Deck fits a 80" x 60" queen size mattress. Height is 40.5" high from floor to top of headboard; 78" to top of columns. Width of bed at widest point is 69.5" excluding the columns; 85.5" wide including columns. Total depth of bed from backside of headboard to front of footboard is 83 inches. Currently there is a detachable light switch on the backside of the headboard with extension cords that control the lights under the platform and behind the columns. Height from floor to top of side rails is 15 inches (bed deck is recessed 2 inches below top of side rails; height from floor to bottom of side rails is 8 inches. Headboard height from deck to top is 27.5"; footboard height from deck to top is 5.5". Columns are 78" high by 7.5" wide (15" wide at top inclusive of brass crown moulding) and 4 inches deep. Overall very clean with no material condition issues or imperfections. NOTE: please reference image 8 to see inside the base of bed beneath the deck. The crossmembers are secured to the side rails by a specialty bracket which has a metal clip sliding over two hard plastic fittings. Eventually these will wear out, at which time we recommend replacing with traditional 2 inch metal L brackets.

In its sleek credenzas, chic mirrored cabinets and sculptural dining tables, vintage Ello furniture encapsulates the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood Regency style.

Ello founder Lothar H. Molton (1926-2012) took his family and fled Nazi-occupied Germany and established his furniture company in Chicago, Illinois, in 1956 as a garage operation. In 1968, the company moved to the renowned furniture town of Rockford, where many of the country's most well-known producers once set up manufacturing operations. Over the next four decades, Ello enjoyed great success as a producer of furniture and an importer, growing into a 150,000-square-foot warehouse and a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing plant.

Though more often featuring an integration of flashy brass accents and materials such as travertine versus the dark woods and clean lines associated with mid-century modern design, Ello furniture was known in its heyday for being as practical as it was stylish. The company's motto was "Contemporary Furniture of Distinction," and their designs were highly functional with just the right amount of flair for the modern home.

In 1976, the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel described an Ello modular wall unit as "a rare combination of function plus spectacular glamour." Ello also collaborated with well-known designers of the era, like O.B. Solie. During the 1970s, Solie worked with mirrored glass, bronze, oak and more to design a range of tallboys, chests, sideboards and other pieces that boasted gilt brass escutcheons and brushed chrome drawer pulls.

In its prime, Ello held annual inventory clearance sales that attracted hundreds of customers. People lined up around the warehouse, sometimes camping out days in advance. Sales started to become more frequent, and in 2010, Ello closed its doors. In 2011, they auctioned off the rest of their merchandise.

Today vintage Ello furniture continues to enjoy popularity for its bold but practical designs.
