The 'Sea Cloud' Four-Poster PAIR Ex: Marjorie Merriweather Post
About the Item
Likely made in New York City to the taste prevalent in the late Federal period; shop of, 'school of' Duncan Phyfe, or an equivalent maker. The upper spindle posts (12") above the first ring turning were detached while used aboard the Post yacht; and reattached for subsequent residential usage at a succession of Post family homes in Florida and New York State. AN ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATION: This special 'pair' can be, and have been, discretely 'bound' as a couples bed; without altering their antique structure or diminishing their antique value. Box springs are inserted in the separate frames; and one mattress of ample size for two, is placed atop.

- Date of Manufacture:Early 19th Century
- Condition:Fine structural and polished surface condition; with evidence of wear as might be<br /> expected of decades aboard a seagoing yacht. There are four small brass lined holes in the posts at the head of each bed, to anchor upholstered headboard pads (attached well beneath the eagles); de rigueur for the well-outfitted bed. The decades-old canopy upholstery should be replaced. The side, foot and head rails show differing coloration from the headboards and posts; but in any event have old exceedingly attractive patination and are covered by bed drapings.
