A pair of bedside tables by Carlo De Carli for Sormani, Italy, 1960s

About the Item

Pair of walnut wood and glass bedside tables, designed by Carlo de Carli, produced by Sormani in 1964. This pair of small wooden nightstands stands out for the precious interplay of shades, starting from the intricate grain of the wood used, leading to the reflections of the glass composing the top. Designed by Carlo de Carli, they feature an absolutely essential line: simply two drawers, an open compartment, and a support surface. This is how these pieces present themselves for use, aided by the mobility provided by four wheels, allowing for easy movement and multiplying their potential applications. Finished on the back as well, they do not lose in aesthetics from any angle. Originally intended to complement the furnishings of a bedroom, for their functionality, they can also be incorporated into other residential or work contexts. It's hard not to envision them reasonably placed beside a workstation or a desk, serving as useful occasional office tables. The design is the result of Carlo de Carli's work, a key figure in twentieth-century design, remembered for winning the first edition of the Compasso d'Oro award and for his fruitful collaboration with Cassina. Like other furniture pieces, these bedside tables are the outcome of de Carli's "integral" approach to design, consistently followed by him. The Milanese designer applied, with full awareness, the same formal and aesthetic principles in both architecture and the design of small functional objects. Indeed, a common thread can be identified between these furniture pieces designed for Sormani in 1964 and other architectural projects from the same period, such as the San Gerolamo Emiliani church in Milan. The furniture is in excellent original condition in all parts. Dimensions: 40W x 37D x 50H Bibliography: Domus n. 410, January 1964, p. d/190
