Pair of 17th Century Carved and Polychromed Table Columns from Italy
About the Item
From the 1600’s, this pair of tabletop grape leaf columns are polychromed with partial colors of white, light teal and gold. There are stylized acanthus leaf capitals at the top. Carved vines of grape leaves wind around the twist turned columns. The bases have double round ornamentation. They are small versions of Solomonic Columns. The term is used to describe columns resembling the original columns from the Temple of Solomon, delivered by Constantine the Great to St. Peters Basilica in the 4th century. The mid-1600s saw a revival of interest in Solomonic columns, and we see them appearing in tapestries and paintings.
These unusual tabletop grape leaf columns will be a fascinating accessory for any surface.
