Admiral's Saber Early 19th Century
About the Item
Ce sabre, par tradition familiale, a été porté par le contre-amiral ANGOT des ROTOURS, né le 2 juin 1773 aux Rotours, généralité d’Alençon; il est décédé le 26 mars 1844 à Brest, dans le Finistère. Il fut en service de 1791 à 1838.
Capitaine de frégate en 1808; major du 6e équipage de haut-bord, par décret des 25 et 31 juillet 1811; capitaine de vaisseau de 2e classe, par ordonnance du 8 juillet 1814, avec rang du 1er juillet, grade confirmé aux Cent-Jours par décret du 19 mai 1815; il fit partie du conseil de guerre maritime, convoqué à Rochefort au début de l’année 1817 pour juger le commandant de la frégate La Méduse.
Capitaine de vaisseau de 1re classe le 1er février 1822; contre-amiral, le 17 août 1822.
Décorations: Légion d’honneur, chevalier le 23 juin 1810, officier le 28 avril 1821, commandeur le 20 septembre 1823, grand officier le 17 novembre 1837. Chevalier de Saint-Louis le 18 août 1814, commandeur le 29 octobre 1826. Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Ferdinand d’Espagne, grand-croix en 1823. Ordre de la Tour et de l’Épée du Portugal, grand-croix en 1824.
Baron héréditaire par lettre patente, le 28 décembre 1816.
Gouverneur de la Guadeloupe, du 28 février 1826 au 31 janvier 1830.
Beau sabre d’amiral modèle à l’orientale dans l’esprit du règlement du 1er prairial an XII.
Garde à chaînette en laiton, finement ciselée et dorée en fort relief de feuillages et au milieu d’une ancre dans un médaillon rond, sur le devant, et d’une rosace, à l’arrière, poignée à deux plaquettes en ébène agrémentées d’une pastille gravée de fleurs et ornée sur le pourtour d’une bande de laiton doré gravée de lauriers; au pommeau elle est percée d’un trou pour recevoir la dragonne; lame à forte cambrure, courte, polie blanc, gravée sur la moitié; fourreau en bois recouvert de chagrin à couture métallique et trois garnitures en laiton, ciselées et dorées ornées de feuillages et terminées par un bourrelet figurant un cordage, chape ciselée dans un cartouche de Neptune assis sur un coquillage et tenant un trident, bouton de chape ciselé d’une tête de lion; la garniture intermédiaire est décorée d’un gros fleuron, la bouterolle est entièrement ornée de feuillages et se termine par un dard en forme de coquille.
