Rare SWISS MODEL 1830 BELL TOP SHAKO Helmet to Jaeger Regiment

About the Item

RARE SWISS MODEL 1830 BELL TOP SHAKO TO A JAGER REGIMENT Constructed of felt body with solid leather peak, band and top (misshaped), white metal chin scales , red cockade with Swiss devise of red cross on a white background, brass plate with hunting horn insignia, a canvas patent leather type lining and a blue, white and green wool pompom. In fair condition for it's age, the lining now worn and the leather top has lost it's shape. It would benefit from some sympathetic restoration in reshaping the top which would restore significantly it's overall shape. The Swiss Model 1830 Bell Top Shako refers to a specific style of military headgear worn by Swiss soldiers during the 19th century. The term "shako" generally refers to a tall, cylindrical military cap with a visor, often adorned with various insignia, feathers, or other decorations. The "bell top" designation indicates a particular shape for the crown of the shako, resembling a bell in its curvature. The Swiss military, like many European armies during the 19th century, underwent various reforms and modernisations to adapt to changing warfare tactics and technologies. The Model 1830 shako was part of these reforms, representing a standardised design adopted by the Swiss military in the early 19th century. The designation "to a Jager regiment" indicates that this specific shako was likely associated with a Jäger (or Jaeger) regiment. Jäger units were specialised light infantry or rifle units known for their marksmanship and reconnaissance skills. They often operated independently or in small groups, conducting skirmishing, scouting, and other specialised tasks on the battlefield. Two similar examples were sold in Fischer auction room Luzern on the 8 & 9 September 2011, Lots 1321 & 1322. Please note that the oak hat stand is not included in this sale. Measurements : diameter top 26cm, height 18.5cm.
