About the Item
1 Volume. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnets from the Portuguese. A lovely Cosway-style binding by Bayntun in full purple morocco with the upper cover set with a hand-painted portrait of Browning under glass, bordered in gilt. Both the front and back covers are bordered in intricate floral gilt detailing. Raised bands gilt with panels displaying ornate gilt floral detailing and label lettering in gilt. All of the edges are gilt with morocco and gilt turn-ins as well as watered silk doublures and endpapers. Published by Basil Blackwell for the Shakespeare Head Press in Oxford, 1945.
