Sometimes called naive art, the paintings produced by the folk artists might have decorated a home, announced the name of a pub or a shop, illustrated a prime stock animal for breeding, or dramatically have announced the arrival of a ship in port - all in the age before print and photograph changed the world. Often painted in oils or carved in wood, the tradesman's art was bold, distinctive and literal. It was also charming, and many find in it a character and authenticity that can be missing from the work of trained artists. Now, more than ever before, the work of the artisan artists is respected as a worthy tradition in British art, commanding high prices and acting as inspiration for countless contemporary artists."
