El Lissitzsky - Life, Letters, Texts

About the Item

(El) Lazar Lissitzsky exercised a crucial influence on the course of the visual arts - especially the applied arts - after 1918. Yet, though his name appears in most histories of modern art, his work (of which little survives) is largely unknown. This book, compiled by Lissitzsky's widow, is the first full-length fully documented study of the artist to appear. It opens with a long biographical section, largely based on his letters, which throw a great deal of light on his aims and on the circles in which he moved. This is followed by a series of plates in which every field of his activity is handsomely represented, and by two collections of literary documents: theoretical writings by Lissitzsky himself, and accounts of him by contemporaries and by later critics. Now, for the first time, the reader can form a proper assessment of a man whose work is still one of the most potent forces in twentieth-century art. Contains 278 plates, 100 in color.
