The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale by Christopher Gilbert. New York: Tabard Press, 1978. Hardcover with dust jacket. 288 pp. An extensive resource book on the life and work of Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779.) Chippendale is the best known and most influential designer of English furniture who's designs were made accessible through his publication "The Gentleman & Cabinet Maker's Directory." His furniture adorns some of the finest English houses including Petworth, Harewood, Burton Constable along with many others. He not only designed furniture but silk tassels, bell pulls, wallpapers, and curtains. The book has 525 black and white illustrations including drawings from Chippendale's furniture publication.
