Louis XVI Furniture by F.J.B.Watson. London: Alec Tiraniti, 1960. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. 404 pp. An invaluable resource book on Louis XVI furniture with 242 black and white plates. In the 18th c the development of the luxury arts was at its peek. The furniture makers were highly specialized and were assisted by a host of craftsmen specializing in carving, gilding, bronze-casting, lock making and upholstery. It includes chapters on the evolution of forms, veneered and carved furniture, techniques of marquetry, lacquer, porcelain and mounts, trade guilds, influences and Louis XVI in England.
