Mapplethorpe by Robert Mapplethorpe, Intro. by Arthur Coleman Danto

About the Item

Mapplethorpe by Robert Mapplethorpe, Introduction by Arthur Coleman Danto. Random House (NY) Published: 1992. Hardcover with dust jacket. "Robert Mapplethorpe began taking photographs in 1970 with a Polaroid camera given to him by a friend. Nearly twenty years later, when Mapplethorpe died at the age of forty-two, he was considered one of the most important photographers of his time. His elegant and sometimes shocking nudes, the black-and-white portraits, flower still lifes, and images of sexual sadomasochism had been exhibited widely and were the subject of serious critical attention in Europe and America. A few months after his death, Mapplethorpe became the focus of an acrimonious debate over federal funding of the arts when an exhibition of his work was canceled by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The director of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, was subsequently acquitted of obscenity charges brought against him for presenting the same exhibition." "This is the definitive collection of Mapplethorpe's black-and-white photographs, drawing on the full range of his work, from the early Polaroids to the haunting self-portraits taken shortly before he died. It has been prepared in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, which was established by the artist to provide funds for AIDS research and photographic projects."--Dust Jacket. The definitive collection of nearly three hundred duotone photographs chronicles the development of Mapplethorpe's career, in a collection that includes his society portraits, nudes, floral still lifes, and explicit erotic images. 20,000 first printing. Renowned photographer Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989. Here is the first collection--published with the cooperation of his estate--drawn from his entire career, including those explicit images that sparked a national debate on censorship and federal funding of the arts. 280 duotone photographs. NPT Books, a division of Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.

  • The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger, 1st Ed
    Located in valatie, NY
The Gernsheim Collection, Edited by Roy Flukinger. University of Texas Press, Sep 1, 2010. One of the most important collections of photography in the world. Amassed by the renowned husband-and-wife team of Helmut and Alison Gernsheim between 1945 and 1963, it contains an unparalleled range of images, beginning with the world's earliest-known photograph from nature, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. It includes some 35,000 major and representative photographs from the 19th and 20th c; a research library of some 3,600 books, journals, and published articles; about 250 autographed letters and manuscripts; and more than 200 pieces of early photographic equipment. Its encyclopedic scope—as well as the expertise and taste with which the Gernsheims built the collection—makes the Gernsheim Collection one of the world's premier resources for the study and appreciation of the development of photography. Published to coincide with a landmark exhibition staged by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, which owns the collection, this book presents masterpieces of the collection, along with lesser-known images of great historical significance. Arranged in chronological order, this selection effectively constitutes a visual history of photography from its beginnings to the mid-20th c. Each full-page image is accompanied by an extensive annotation in which Roy Flukinger describes the photograph's place in the evolution of photography and also within the Gernsheim Collection. Flukinger also provides an enlightening introduction in which he traces the Gernsheims' passionate careers as collectors and pioneering historians of photography, showing how their untiring efforts significantly contributed to the acceptance of photography as a fine art and as a field worthy of intellectual inquiry. Appreciations of the Gernsheim Collection by Alison Nordström and Mark Haworth...

  • Fred Herzog, Vancouver Photographs by Fred Herzog, Signed Edition
    Located in valatie, NY
Fred Herzog: Vancouver Photographs by Fred Herzog. Signed Edition exhibition catalog (Vancouver Art Gallery January 25-May 13, 2007). 160 pages with numerous color photographs throughout. "Iconic and influential color images of Vancouver street life from a master photographer who has spent the past fifty years documenting the city, published to coincide with a major exhibition of his work. His eye dwells on the raw urban underbelly of the city: second-hand shops, vacant lots, barber shops and greasy spoons, crowded with people and their stuttering dreams. Since he arrived in Vancouver from Germany in 1953, Fred Herzog has roamed the city's back streets with his camera. Herzog draws upon documentary traditions while incorporating an outsider's sensitivity to a new environment. His color images of street life in the 1950s and '60s prefigure the "New Color" of photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. The text includes essays by Grant Arnold...
