The Miniature in Europe, 4 volumes - Leo R. Schidlof - Akademische Druck, 1964

About the Item

First English Edition, limited to 1000 numbered copies published in 4 volumes by Akademische Druck - und Verlagsanstalt, Graz, 1964. Across the four volumes of this comprehensive work on miniature painting in Europe in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, much-cited expert Leo R. Schidlof created a definitive text on the subject. Beginning with a valuable introduction that covers the general history of this type of painting and the different techniques employed, Schidlof ranges from its fully-realised appearance in the 16th century through to its struggle and defeat at the hands of photography in the 19th. Spanning the first two volumes, he assembles a dictionary that broadens the number of artists and biographical materials known, and corrects errors in the prior literature, following this with a third and fourth volume of plates containing reproductions of the miniatures. Taken together, this expansive work is of great use in understanding the techniques and characteristics of these painters and remains invaluable to appreciative art fans, specialists, and those wishing to establish the authenticity of a work by any particular artist. An encyclopaedic and detailed art historical classic. Hardbacks in publisher's original dust jackets, 4 volumes. Each volume around 500 pages, illustrations in black and white in volumes 3 & 4, text in English throughout. Dimensions: Each volume roughly 28 x 20.5 x 5 cm
