Modern Design in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1890-1990 Hardcover Book

About the Item

Modern Design in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1890-1990 Hardcover Book.January 1, 1990 by R. Craig Miller (Author). The exceptional and wide-ranging modern design collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, are virtually unpublished and rarely on view. For this handsomely produced book, R. Craig Miller, the museum's curator of modern design, has selected 130 masterworks, each of which has been specially photographed in full color. 250 illustrations. With the opening in 1987 of the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing, the Metropolitan Museum at long last had a permanent gallery in which to display its Modern design and architecture collection. This space has made it possible for objects that had not been on view for several decades to be shown on a rotating basis, although they can only impart a hint of the remarkably rich collection that the Museum has amassed over a century. This book presents an extraordinary number of masterpieces from the collection that we would never have the space or ability to display simultaneously. Although not a catalogue raisonné, this book does reveal the vast range and depth of material that the Museum has acquired, most of it in the design and architecture collection of the Department of Twentieth Century Art but a great deal of it also drawn from other parts of the Museum—the American Wing, The Costume Institute, the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, and the Department of Prints and Photographs. It is divided into sections and chronologically organized. Each section begins with an introductory essay for that time period, followed by numerous color reproductions of both overall views and details of these works of art. * Publisher ‏ : ‎ Harry N Abrams Inc; First Edition (January 1, 1990) * Language ‏ : ‎ English Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 304 pagesCondition: No dust jacket.Out of print.1st edition 1st printing. From Publishers Weekly Intended to showcase items not on permanent display, this volume chronicles the evolution of the design collection at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Design, also known as applied, industrial or decorative art, is defined here as work conceived by a designer and manufactured in a limited edition. Miller, curator of modern design at the Denver Art Museum, provides an informative, if dry, introductory text emphasizing key curatorial figures and important exhibitions in the Metropolitan's history. Significant art movements of the past 100 years are represented by examples of glass, ceramics, metalwork, lighting, textiles, costume, architectural and decorative drawings and furniture forms; more than half of the 360 illustrations of some 125 masterworks are in color. An armchair tour of the museum's collection, this overview provides a basic description of trends in the applied arts during the last century.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art: The Renaissance in the North. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, 1987. 1st Ed hardcover with dust jacket. At roughly the same time that Italian art was beginning to reflect a reawakening of the classical spirit—an epoch and style we call the Renaissance—the arts of Northern Europe were experiencing their own efflorescence. Painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts were pursued with a new vigor in the Netherlands, in Germany, in France, and in England, and resulted in a vast body of work that constitutes one of the glories of Western civilization. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the masters of the North developed styles quite distinct from those in the South: an attention to minute detail, particularly with regard to landscape, but also in domestic interiors; and an emotive piety that dramatized the sorrow and suffering of the Passion. Jan van Eyck's Crucifixion and Last Judgment present a horrific vision of the death of Christ and the damnation of sinners, set against a deep and distant landscape, sensitively and realistically rendered. The Lamentation by Petrus Christus...

The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Europe in the Age of Monarchy. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1987, NY. 1st Ed hardcover.
