Pair of Exhibition Catalogs, Chinese Glass, Phoenix Art Museum & China Institute

About the Item

1. Clear As Crystal, Red As Flame: Later Chinese Glass, by Claudia Brown, Donald Rabiner. Natural History, University of Washington Press, 1990. Gloriously colored Chinese glass artifacts, as transparent as air or as opaque as clay, were exhibited in the first comprehensive survey of the craft at the China Institute in America, 125 East 65th Street. The 68 vessels and jewelry items in, ''Clear as Crystal, Red as Flame: Later Chinese Glass'' reveal how deftly artisans imitated ceramics and stones in objects fashioned from the 14th to the 19th centuries. 2. Chinese Glass of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911 : The Robert H. Clague Collection, by Claudia Brown and Donald Rabiner. Phoenix Art Museum, 1987. November 21, 1987 - January 31, 1988, and three other museums subsequently. 92 objects are illustrated, 51 in color. In addition, 8 examples of Qing Dynasty Glass and 7 examples of Qing Enameled Glass are described and illustrated.Chinese glass of the 18th and 19th centuries has attracted an increasingly larger following in recent years among collectors seeking vessels with identifiable period marks. Many pieces offered at auctions are sold for under $2,000 each, but prices have risen steadily over the last several years so that the choicest pieces now command five- and six-figure prices.
