About the Item

A childhood in the countryside, the legacy of Lina Bo Bardi, a foundational education in artisanal joinery and the inspiration of concrete art were the influences that fused in the work produced by Paulo Alves over the last 20 years. The result is a true expression of Brazilian design, richly illustrated and described in the book, which was recently released by Editora Olhares and is simply titled Paulo Alves. Seen together in the book, Paulo’s pieces of furniture unveil a creative logic where wood and wood’s natural and symbolic characteristics, play the leading role. The book shows the progression of some of the solutions used by the designer, and their recombination into different product lines, always with remarkable results. The author’s inventiveness, and his mastery of wood Z evoke the legacy of the masters of modern Brazilian furniture. The book includes texts by musician Nando Reis, designers Marcelo Rosenbaum and Zanini de Zanine, journalist Regina Galvão, Lu de Laurentiz, merchant Maria Abadia Haich and industrialist Guido Otte. Here is an excerpt from Marcelo Rosenbaum’s text: “Paulo’s joinery work is admirable, and the final result is always an elegant design with a fresh look. His talent seems to me to be linked to a great capacity for synthesis, which enables him to simplify what will be produced. Such rationality involves the aesthetical pleasure of the person who will use the piece, the piece’s suitability to the function it will be given and, at the same time, the utilization of materials to the limit of their usefulness.” The text was written in Portuguese and translated into English.
