Pieces of a Pattern: Lacroix by Lacroix - Patrick Mauriès

About the Item

Published by Thames & Hudson, 1st English edition, London, 1992. Hardback with English text translated from French. Lacroix, the legendary couturier, a sensualist and an aesthete, sported a signature mélange of elements from the theatre, the opera, and the fine arts sprinkled with a dash of the counterculture. Lacroix had a stint working as a museum cataloguer in Montpellier before he came to Paris, the experience later proved imperative in developing his signature style of opulence and extravagance. This experience, coupled with Lacroix’s influence from his birthplace - Arles - a city renowned for its Roman ruins, and its Spanish corrida (bullfighting), cultivated a fascination for the past in Lacroix. Lacroix is equally fascinated with the grandeur of English royalties, the ordered tweeds and the eccentric hairstyles, we can find traces of Cecil Beaton’s influence in Lacroix’s couture. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of colour and monochrome photographs, interspersed with personal diaries, anecdotes and images from his sketchpads, this volume is a truly mesmerising find, ushering us into Lacroix’s incredible armoire and rich inner world.
