Hardcover with dust jacket. 288 pages; illustrated with 40 full-color illustrations and about 325 in black and white. From Mortimer Wheeler's introduction: "the buildings here selected are mostly, though not wholly, monuments of religion or death, by the accidental reason that such monuments tend more readily to survive. There is consolation in the fact they tend to present the best workmanship of their age, as though born for immortality. But there are also secular works of high distinction: the Palace of Persepolis, the Palace-Fortresses of Lahore and Delhi, the palace-city of Fatehpur Sikri, the Forbidden City of Peking, and others.".
