Mid-Century Chess Set by Robert Rosenwald

About the Item

Robert Rosenwald, son of art collector and philanthropist Lessing Rosenwald, studied at Cranbrook under the likes of Harry Bertoia, preceding a lifelong career sculpting and drawing. His work has been shown at the Whitney, among many other institutions. A chess enthusiast, Rosenwald designed multiple chess sets in his life, including four sets that were featured on the cover of Chess Review magazine. This set perfectly captures the modernism of mid-century America, as well as the movement towards materials that could be produced inexpensively for the masses. Constructed from paper on card stock with pennies to provide the pieces' weighted bottom, this set is ingeniously designed so that the pawns fit inside the other pieces so all can fit in the paper on card stock box. In good vintage condition with some creasing to the box. A few pieces are missing but the box contains all the dimensions and designs to scan, print, and construct replacement pieces. Box dimensions - 8" x 3.5" x 2".
