Mid-20th Century Israeli Brass and Enamel Hanukkah Lamp

About the Item

Brass Hanukkah lamp, Israel, 1950s. Enamel over brass. Marked on bottom, "made in Israel." The front scene depicts the Maccabees against Roman soldiers over the battle of Jerusalem. Colors of green, red and gold are shown with a decorated archway resembling Jerusalem stonework. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
