Nantucket Opera House Menu, circa 1960s to 1970s

About the Item

Rare Vintage Menu from the Opera House Restaurant on Nantucket, circa 1960s. The beloved and fondly missed Opera House was the iconic restaurant owned and operated by Gwen Gaillard on South Water Street. While "quirkily" casual, it was the first elegant restaurant on Nantucket Island and forever changed the island's culinary and social scene. Gwen Gaillard was a New York socialite who moved to Nantucket and truly became a part of the fiber of Nantucket. She was a gourmand and a connoisseur; she owned an antiques shop on island for many years, and the Opera House was renowned for its crazy and eclectic decor of antiques (for instance the phone booth was an 18th Century Sedan Chair). The missing Cigar Store Indian that once stood at its front remains one of the island's enduring mysteries. Her cookbook "Recipes, With Love" was published in 1966, illustrated by noted Nantucket artist Roy Bailey, and is still highly sought. Her head chef was Lucien van Vyve, another beloved island artist. Gwen was the founder of the famous and highly regarded Opera House Cup Regatta, the first yacht race for classic all-wooden hulled vessels. The menu remains in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted in a contemporary frame. Measures: 21-3/8 in H x 13 in W

  • Hand Colored Photograph of Nantucket Street Scene by Marshall Gardiner, Ca 1910
    Located in Nantucket, MA
Antique Hand Colored Photograph of Nantucket Street Scene by Marshall Gardiner (1884-1942), circa 1910, a period hand tinted photograph entitled "Nantucket Shearing Cart and Quakers" showing classic grey shingled houses on a cobblestone paved street, with a couple in horse drawn cart riding away from the viewer, and four women on doorstep and sidewalk, all dressed in period Quaker attire. It is interesting to note that the couple in cart are seated on antique Nantucket Bow Back Windsor chairs. The photograph was titled and hand signed in pencil across the bottom of the old acid foxed mat; the photograph is now mounted in new archival acid free matting, and a photocopy of the original pencil inscription has been preserved on the reverse. The photograph itself remains in excellent condition. H. Marshall Gardiner (1884-1942) was born on September 18, 1884 in Windsor, Ontario, and immigrated to the United States circa 1890, where his father W.H. Gardiner opened two photographic studios, one in Detroit during the winter months and a second at Mackinac Island during the more tourist-oriented summer months. Recognizing the potential of Florida's rapidly growing tourist trade, around 1894-95 he moved with his family from Detroit to Daytona, Florida which proved much more accommodating to the family's photographic business during the colder winter months. Marshall learned many of his photographic techniques from his father prior to going out on his own at a relatively early age. Whereas his father generally used wet collodian negatives, technology had advanced to where he was able to use gelatin dry plates in his earlier years, and later the less expensive and much more convenient roll film. Another very important lesson learned from his father was strategy of setting up shop in a tourist resort. Early in his career he traveled to Bermuda where he shot a series of beautiful Bermuda scenes that he hand-colored and successfully sold over a number of years to the local tourist trade. Around 1910, at the age of around 24, he first traveled to the island of Nantucket. The year-round population of Nantucket was then just over 2500, not nearly enough to sustain a photographic business for the entire year, so he opened a joint Photography and Art Supplies Store. Working as Nantucket's exclusive agent for Eastman Kodak, his business expanded to include the island's only photo-finishing service. However, with such a small year-round population, even the addition of a Gift Shop to compliment the hand-painted photographs, general portrait...

  • Elizabeth Taylor 1970s Handwritten Love Letter to Richard Burton
    Located in Jersey, GB
The unique Elizabeth Taylor Richard Burton love letter: A love letter written, in pencil, by Elizabeth Taylor to her husband Richard Burton on their ten year wedding anniversary, March 15th 1974, just days before their breakup. Taylor and Burton were renting a house in Oroville, California while Burton was filming his latest movie "The Klansman". Their lease on the home began on February 15th 1974. The letter reads in full: "My darling (my still) my husband. I wish I could tell you of my love for you, of my fear, my delight, my pure animal pleasure of you - (with you) - my jealousy, my pride, my anger at you, at times. Most of all my love for you, and whatever loves you can dole out to me - I wish I could write about it but I can't. I can only "boil and bubble" inside and hope you understand how I really feel. Anyway I lust thee, your (still) wife. P.S. O'Love, let us never take each other for granted again! P.P.S. How about that- ten years!!" Taylor had warned Burton from the start of their marriage in 1964 that she had zero tolerance for infidelity. However during the filming of When Eagles Dare, Burton resumed an affair with co-star Mary Ure. After that, Taylor made sure she was on set with Burton every day in 1969 for the shooting of Anne of the thousand days. A further affair with co-star Genevieve Bujold lasted many years. An affair with Nathalie Delon followed in 1972, along with rumors of an affair with Raquel Welch. Taylor finally lost patience during the filming of The Klansman when Burton commenced an affair with "a teenager, a hotel waitress and a string of other women." The love letter is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Toni Hennings, the woman who rented the Oroville house to them: "This letter written by Elizabeth Taylor while renting my home from Feb 15th till April 18th 1974. It was left behind - inside a book in a drawer under the master bedroom bed...
