Diminutive 19th Century American Mercantile Trade Store Display Model

About the Item

A rare and historic diminutive hand-crafted and painted antique American country display model general store - mining trade mercantile cabinet. Most likely commissioned as a salesman sample store display or apprentice prototype, dating to the early/mid 19th century, attributed to the American gold and silver trade, probably displaying two pieces - a store counter and desk. Reminiscent of some notable works found during the California Gold Rush, circa 1849, which led to the rapid territorial expansion of the United States, and the two previous gold rushes, North Carolina, circa 1799, and Georgia, circa 1830. Featuring a primitive hand forged iron and twine balance scale and accessories, raised on a rectangular platform mounted with decorative scroll shaped architectural elements, atop a merchant desk mounted with a tall rear gallery with molded cornice, above various shelves and pigeonhole cubbies, fitted with six wooden drawers, atop a single frieze drawer, raised on square tapering straight legs. Numerous heavily patinated metal discs - faux coins included (shown in a removed drawer in photos). Dimensions: (approx) 43" High, 19.5" Wide, 17" Deep Overall a superb museum quality example. Most likely one-of-a-kind. Great original unrestored antique condition with nicely aged patina over the whole. Retaining original antique character marks and age appropriate wear, including heavily worn distressed patina, warm and mellow tones, with minor chippy paint losses. Presents splendidly. Diminutive / children's scale, the ideal size and small proportions for display.
