Pair of Chinese hardstone and cloisonné enamel flower models
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 52cm, width 46cm, depth 36cm
These two superb flower models are almost identical in design. Each comprises a metal tree decorated with hardstone leaves and fruit, which sit within elaborate cloisonné enamel planters.
With waved rims, the cloisonné enamel bases are rendered on a rich blue ground, upon which polychrome scroll decoration is added. Gold borders adorn the apron and base. On each side is a large scenic panel, all four of which depict cranes within foliate landscapes. In Chinese culture, the crane symbolises longevity, imbuing these objects with a spiritual significance.
The textural, realistic tree trunks that sit within the planters extend into branching arms of thread-wrapped wire, from which hang nephrite leaves. The wonderful variegation that naturally occurs with this material adds to the realism of the leaves. Bulbous fruits resembling pomegranates also hang, crafted from jade, agate, and rose quartz. These materials symbolise purity and strength, harmony and balance, and unconditional love respectively, adding further spiritual symbolism to these objects. Pomegranates, too, are seen to symbolise abundance and fertility within Chinese culture.
Filled with interesting symbolism, these beautifully designed objets d’art would be sure to complement both traditional and modern interiors.
