This highly detailed and unusual scale model is partially planked on one side to reveal the interior structure. There are hinged panels in the sides which open to afford a glimpse of the interior. The whole is raised on two supports upon a shaped plinth base. Italian, circa 1880. Provenance Provenance: By repute King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and gifted to Duke of the Abruzzi thence by descent until sold in 1973 to Arnaldo Ruschioni. The present model represents a clipper, or fast sailing vessel, first introduced in the early 19th century. The clipper was outfitted with three high masts and a large number of sails, designed to carry small loads of profitable cargo quickly over long distances. This beautiful French late 19th century chest of drawers in black ebonized wood and cherrywood reproduces with perfect proportions in scale a miniature cabinet with three drawers and an upper flap door that opens to reveal a white marble top and an oval mirror inside, nice hand carved band on top with geometrical pattern and molded base. The black lacquered wood creates a wonderful contrast with the beautiful honey-colored wood grain. Despite its convenient size, extremely detailed, this chest of drawers is equipped with a white Carrara marble top and a small mirror that make it even more special and useful. The model of a piece of furniture was originally created by cabinet makers to show their skills to the customer and to present the sample of the furniture which would then have been produced on a larger scale. These commode miniatures, along with other specimens, were displayed in the craftsman's workshop to serve as examples to aid the potential client in making a selection. Both examples are stood on reupholstered red velour material and support bases, recently uncovered in a UK estate auction sale as part of a large taxidermy collection. Size in inches: large dome H 7.5” x W 11” x D 6” Small dome H 6.5” x W 9” x D 5” Size in inches: large dog H 4.5” x W 6” x D 2” Small dog H 3” x W 6” x D 1” Completely solid in structure and form, with natural wear and tear due to age. The smaller dog has a few surfaces tear as shown, both rear paws are missing on the larger example. Aged surface as you would expect, these are original example and not the terrible examples of pups that are sometimes used distastefully. Please expect an aged look as these examples are over 100 years old as are the domes. For a fashionable woman in Victorian England a pet miniature dog was as indispensable as an opera box...
