Regency Satinwood Miniature Chest

About the Item

A good quality late Regency Period, 19th century, satinwood miniature chest of attractive small proportions having well figured and crossbanded top, over three drawers with original turned wooden knobs, raised on elegant original splayed feet with shaped apron. A chariming little 19th century miniature chest of drawers, which is shallower than most and therefore attractively proportioned. It also boasts beautifully figured satinwood veneers which have retained an excellent colour and patina. This would probably have been made as a travelling salesmans sample piece originally. There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts. It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture however and in good condition, ready to be placed straight into the home. It would work wonderfully on top of a dressing table, or full size chest of drawers, in a bedroom for storage of cuff links, jewellery or similar small but valuable items. circa 1830. This particular miniature chest of drawers is probably the latter and would have been made as a sample piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny detail phenomenal in all honesty. They work that would have gone into constructing this with all of its fine details would actually have been more of a challenge and taken a more skilled craftsmen than its full size counterparts would have done. It is also super quality and unusual being constructed from burr oak which has taken on an exceptional rich colour and patina over the years of its life.
