1939 Art Deco Original Story & Clark "Storytone" Electric Piano and Bench

About the Item

1939 Art Deco original story & clark “Storytone” electric piano and bench. Fully restored workings, both piano, and amp. Refinished and in stunning condition. A rare and historically important instrument, the RCA Storytone piano was built in 1939 in a joint venture between Story & Clark and RCA and designed by John Vassos. The first American electric piano debuted at the 1939 World’s Fair and has an art deco/streamline design that rivals that of the finest furniture of the era. Contact us by message and I can send you video with sound. The piano has normal strings and action but no soundboard — the sound is amplified through electromagnetic pickups, circuitry, and a speaker system. It works perfectly and sounds exceptionally great for sustained styles of playing, as notes can last up to a minute or more with its unique form of resonance. It sounds much more like a real piano than a typical electric piano. The design is the ultimate streamlined treatment, encompassing amazing detailing quality and workmanship. Fortune Magazine named John Vassos as one of the top 10 American Industrial Designers. Examples of his work are included in 20th Century Design collections of several museums.
