About the Item
Rare and wonderful Saint Anthony church sculpture, European 17th century Baroque.
This rare and sizable wall statuette of Franciscan Saint Anthony is another one of our recent great finds. This wonderful church relic was hand-carved out of wood and polychrome painted in the middle of the European Baroque era. Initially it will have been made for a niche inside one of our early European churches or monasteries. From the oakwooden plaque on the back and the way that 'plaque' has been attached (with hand forged wrought iron nails) we can see that this mid to late 1600s antique was restored / reinforced in the 18th century. Since the (polychrome) paint on such ancient pieces usually will not last this long, this extremely old church relic was re-painted between 50 and 80 years ago. This repainting was not done by the best professional, but what is most important is that this unique and top quality carved wooden Anthony sculpture has resurfaced and that it can again be enjoyed in either a church, a monastery or in the home of a private collector. The base (or the lowest wooden part of this sculpture) fits with the rest of this sculpture, but it is not original and we feel it was added probably at the same time when the last re-painting restauration was done. To us, this sculpture is beautifully patinated/colored and the serene joy that radiates from the faces of Anthony and of the child are an absolute joy to look at. The typical Baroque design lily flower that Anthony is holding too is wonderful and its deeper meaning will be known by those who love this type of religious art. Thanks to the two antique wrought iron rings on the back, safely mounting this antique Anthony of Padua statue will take no more then just a few minutes.
