Antique Church Crucifix with Jesus, Mary & John Sculptures of Boxwood from 1700s

About the Item

Amazing and unique work(s) of religious art. If you are a collector of special and truly old religious artefacts then this one of a kind crucifix could be the one for you. This crucifix was one of the prized possessions of a Dutch collector that passed on some three years ago. Via his relatives we were able to purchase a large part of his collection. Many of the items we have already sold via 1stdibs and they are again being enjoyed and worshipped in churches, monasteries and private homes around the globe. This unique crucifix is actually made in two time periods. The oak base and the cross were made in the mid 1800s. They are all hand-crafted and hand-carved out of solid oak only. We believe that this base and cross were specifically made for the amazing and ancient boxwood sculptures of Jesus, Mother Mary and Saint John the Baptist. We have conservatively dated the boxwood sculptures as being mid 1700s, but they could even be 17th century. These types of crucifixes with the ancient and quality carved boxwood sculptures are getting ever harder to find and the original ones are mostly church or museum owned. Over the centuries some repairs were done to the sculpture of Christ. Especially where the arms are connected to the body and where the feet connect to the legs. Also on both hands a few fingers are missing. On both hands of Mary three (pieces of) fingers are missing. Saint John however, looks to be in mint condition and that is like a minor miracle. There also is a wooden chip missing on the INRI sign. With the age taken into account we are still very confident in saying that this unique and large crucifix is in good to very good condition. The beautiful base comes with a number of top quality carvings, but the ancient boxwood sculptures really are what takes this church relic to the next level. Their look and feel and their patina is among the best we have ever seen and together they give even more weight to the profound meaning of this crucification and how it impacted so many lives over the course of time. For safe traveling/shipping this good size and truly impressive crucifix with Mary and Saint John on either side can be taken apart (as shown in one of the attached images). Our price for this unique work of religious art includes perfect packing (in a custom made and strengthened box) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. • Large Antique Crucifix with a Hand Carved & Bronzed Wooden Corpus of Jesus 1800s
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and large size, antique corpus of Christ on a blackened oak cross. If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Thanks to the pair of metal hooks on the back, safely mounting this ecclesiastical antique tight to your wall will be very easy to do. Our fair price for this one of a kind crucifix even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth of the cross & corpus: 56 x 30.5 x 8 inches. Maximum height x width of the antique wooden corpus...
