Antique Hand Carved, Gilt and Painted Solid Oak Panels with Arma Christi Symbols

About the Item

Rare and meaningful, quality hand carved Arma Christi church wall panels. These handcrafted and meaningful 19th century church relics portray the so called 'Arma Christi' or 'Instruments of the Passion'. The objects that are hand carved and hand painted inside the Baroque shields in the center of each panel, are all associated with the Passion of Jesus Christ. In Christian symbolism and art they are seen as arms in the sense of heraldry, and also as the weapons Christ used to achieve his conquest over Satan. There are about 20 different objects that are frequently used in Christian art. Inside these, one inch thick, deeply carved Baroque Revival shields are six of those objects. Going from left to right, in image number one of this listing you can first see the scourge used for the 39 lashes and the reed which was placed in Jesus' hand as a sceptre in mockery. In the second shield there are the hand carved crown of thorns and the nails that inflicted the wounds on the hands and feet of Christ. Finally, on the right is the panel with the hammer used to drive the nails into Jesus' hands and feet and the pincers used to remove the nails. Unfortunately we don't know from which church these amazing panels originate, because the former owner/collector is no longer with us. What we do know is that these meaningful Christian works of art are extremely rare, very well made and in very good condition given their age. Thanks to the metal hooks on the back (that were put on in the 20th century) mounting these gilt and hand painted oakwooden panels is child's play. If you already have a space in mind for these unique antiques then maybe you should be their next custodian. If you like their unicity, beauty, deeper meaning, quality and great condition as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially when taken into account that our price for this set of three (good size) church panels includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 workdays. Maximum height x width x depth each: 25.2 x 16.5 x 1 inches.

  • Baroque Style Hand Carved Wooden Crucifix with Stunning Bronze Corpus of Christ
    Located in Lisse, NL
Crucifix from the mid-1800s with a carved shroud or veil depicting Christ in the base. This unique and remarkable antique crucifix can both be used as a table and as a wall crucifix. Over the decades we have sold a number of unique and very well crafted crucifixes, but never one in the Baroque style with this combination of materials and techniques. The overall design and size is what stands out first, but the details and the materials are what make this antique work of religious art extraordinary. With four angels (or putti) watching over a sculpture of the Veil of Veronica, the relatively large base of this unique crucifix is a work of religious art in its own right. It is almost as if the cross is growing from this beautiful base and the cross itself too comes with a number of superbly hand carved details. To us, the most remarkable are the three stunning Baroque shells. With their symbolic meaning of birth and resurrection it is obvious why the artist / sculptor so tastefully incorporated them here. Apart from a minor 'lean' to the left, the cross itself too is in excellent condition. If one were to speak of a trinity in this crucifix then the unique base and cross are completed with an equally striking, solid bronze corpus of Christ...

  • 19th Century French Hand Carved Polychrome and Painted Life-Size Wall Crucifix
    Located in Dallas, TX
This important antique carved statue of Christ nailed on the cross was crafted in Lyon, France, circa 1850. Found in a private chapel in the Rhone Valley, the large antique cross features a detailed hand carved sculpture of Jesus nailed on a wooden cross with forged iron nails over his hands and feet. The painted sculpture is well-proportioned, and has realistic details throughout the body, face, and hair. The pediment has the Latin inscription INRI (in John 19:19), which in English translates to "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews", and John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages, Hebrew, Latin, and Greek during the crucifixion of Jesus. The title "King of the Jews" is only used in the New Testament by gentiles, namely by the Magi, Pontius Pilate, and the Roman soldiers. In contrast, the Jewish leaders use the designation "King of Israel". Although the phrase "King of the Jews" is used in most English translations, it has also been translated "King of the Judeans". The life-size religious crucifix...
