Collection of Bactrian Marble 'Column Idols' 3000 BC
About the Item
Tapering cylindrical forms of varying sizes and marbles, with shallow grooves at top and bottom, in some cases extending round columns completely.
Standing from 7 inches high to 14 inches high.
Ancient Bactria was the region between the mountain range of the Hindu Kush and the Oxus River. Soviet archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi was the first to excavate the Bronze Age sites of Bactria in what is now northern Afghanistan, Uzbeksitan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. It is thought that Bactria was the homeland of the Indo-European tribes who later moved westward into Persia.
Little is known about the function of these stone objects which show little sign of wear and seem to have been votive or ritual in nature.

Sarianidi, V., Die Kunst des alten Afghanistan, (Leipzig, 1986), pl.53.
