Mid-18th Century Italian Silver Book Binding

About the Item

An 18th century Italian silver book binding. An impressively designed, this book binding is formed by two, nearly identical covers, each embossed with a panel of scrolling foliage topped by a coronet and enclosing armorials. Chased leaf-tip forms the borders of the covers, as well as the matching spine. The covers differ in the heraldic emblems in their center: one is embossed with the Finzi (lion with two stars), while the other with the Laudi (squirrel with tree) families. Two openwork clasps are used for opening and closing the book. The binding is unmarked except for Austrian control mark in use 1809-10.
