Mid-19th Century German Silver Hanukkah Lamp

About the Item

German silver Hanukkah lamp, marker's mark L.S. incuse, berlin, 1847-50. Seen in bench form with covered lamps, on shell and scroll feet. The backplate chased with an urn of flowers on trellis ground within embossed leaf border marked on the backplate. A harmoniously folding arch with stylistic decoration is seen along the frame with diamond shaped patterns. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.

Handcut strips of silver that have been bent into curvilinear shapes, with semicircle of candle-sockets, complete with drip-pans. A cast-made pair of birds, appearing to be ducks or geese, flank the servant light, while at top as the finial, a large casting of a hen or rooster. While this overall form of lamp is known as hailing from Iraq, we cannot locate any other Iraqi lamps featuring the animals displayed on our example. Birds such as peacocks were widely used in Iraqi and other Middle-Eastern and North African Chanukah lamps, however the usage of the animals featured on our lamp likely have more to do with the surrounding Islamic culture than revealing any meaning in Judaism, which is typical overall for many motifs found on Jewish ritual...
