Pair of Reliefs, Polychromed and Giltwood, Castilian School, Spain, 16th Century

About the Item

Thanks to the positions of the characters and the elements they have in their hands, it can be said that one of the panels shows the Flagellation and the other would be The Mocking of Christ (or, more specifically, the moment of the Coronation of Thorns). The first relief shows Jesus tied with his arms behind his back and a foot, to a column of tall and smooth shaft with topped with a capital that is very similar to those of Roman Ionic order; the fighters or soldiers that flank him have different postures, and Classic air attire. The other also has a clear Renaissance influence both in the anatomy of the figures and in certain elements, and resembles in some small details engravings of this same theme (Hieronymus Wierix, etc.). It was not until the second third of the 16th century that sculptors emerged in Spain who reached great heights in the Spanish Renaissance, inspired by Italian forms, but providing their own national touch, creating different schools, and with a clear preference for polychrome wood and stewed. In this time, one of the main workshops was Valladolid, with names like Alonso Berruguete and Juan de Juni. Later, the art was evolving towards a classicist or Romanist mannerism, with an important influence of Italian masters, with clear influence of Michelangelo and names like Gaspar Becerra, Esteban Jordán, Juan de Ancheta, etc. Size: 34.5 x 5 x 72.5 cms. or 26 x 6 x 72 cms.
