Silver Besamim Spice Box for Havdalah

About the Item

This beautifully decorated besamim, a decorative spice box used in the weekly Jewish ceremony of Havdalah, marking the conclusion of Shabbat (the Sabbath) - is a fine piece of antique Judaica which has been delicately crafted from solid silver. It dates from 19th century Turkey, during the period of Ottoman rule in the country, and depicts a large silver leaf, intricately engraved and cast to give it a naturalistic feel with branches emerging from it. The spice containers take the form of silver pinecones, and are set on top of the branches. These containers have been decorated on their exteriors with a beautiful, textured pattern, and they are surmounted by finials. There are a number of silver hallmarks stamped onto the rims of the spice containers, and a further mark on the silver branch.
