Stunning Large Oak Corpus Christi on Crucifix w. Symbols of the Four Evangelists

About the Item

Antique large crucifix with stunning quality, hand carved details and an amazing patina. This remarkable and large sculpture of a suffering Christ on the cross is different to almost all others. The artist who hand-sculpted this impressive work of religious art has created a church relic that is second to none. The extremely well carved body and face of Christ make this large and impressive crucifix even more powerful and compelling than most. In many parts of the world humanity has come a long way since the life of Christ, but a lot of His work still needs to be done and He keeps inspiring many of us to move forward. The artist whom created this antique himself too must have been inspired by the life and history of Christ, because how else can anyone create such a divine masterpiece. What makes this large and remarkable crucifix even more impressive are the four sculptures at each end of this cross. The four artistically hand-carved symbols ofcourse represent the four evangelists. The manner in which they are incorporated in this church relic, to us, is symbolical as well. Presented all around and facing Jesus it is like they are vouching to tell His life's (and death's) story in an honest and true manner so that He will live on, on earth as well. *The four Evangelists are the four authors of the four Gospels contained in the Holy Bible, at the beginning of the New Testament. They are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and they are usually represented with their attributes, that are the Angel, the Lion, the Ox and the Eagle. They all were Apostles of Jesus when He was in life and completely embraced their destiny to spread the Word of God through their manuscripts. This meaningful antique too is great value for money. • Extra Large Crucifix with Hand Carved Oak Corpus of Christ for Church or Chapel
    Located in Lisse, NL
Beautifully carved and large size corpus of Jesus, made in the Arts & Crafts era. This meaningful and unique crucifix from the early 1900s comes with a larger than life, hand carved oak Corpus of Christ. The details in the anatomy of this Christ are very well carved and they clearly reveal the suffering and dehydration that His body endured in the final days of his life. The artist/sculptor is clearly showing us the image of Jesus when or right after he bowed his head and died. The solid oak cross is original to this corpus and it was given a different color so that the unique and impressive corpus stands out perfectly. Have you also noticed the perfectly carved and thick crown of thorns on the head of Christ. The patina of this excellent condition and large corpus is another great feature that will never fail to impress. The former owners gave us the photo that you see in image 3 in this listing and in it you can see where this antique corpus...

  • Large Antique Crucifix with a Hand Carved & Bronzed Wooden Corpus of Jesus 1800s
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and large size, antique corpus of Christ on a blackened oak cross. If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Thanks to the pair of metal hooks on the back, safely mounting this ecclesiastical antique tight to your wall will be very easy to do. Our fair price for this one of a kind crucifix even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth of the cross & corpus: 56 x 30.5 x 8 inches. Maximum height x width of the antique wooden corpus...

  • Crucifix on Calvary, Called Plague of Christ, France, Early 18th Century
    Located in Milan, IT
Crucifix on Calvary, called 'Pestis Christi' or Crucifiix Pestis 'Plague of Christ' or Plague Crucifix). The sculpture is composite, made with heterogeneous materials: wax, wood, papier-mâché. The octagonal base is slightly raised and supports the calvary, symbolized by rocks, from which the crucifix rises, made with intentionally unfinished boards and with marked veins. The depicted Christ is peculiar: he shows scarified skin all over his body. Masterfully crafted in wax. They are the plagues of the plague that Christ, 'Agnus Dei' takes charge of with salvific value, for the salvation of the world. At his feet the ordeal full of symbols: evil (snake) with the apple, the 'Memento mori' of human bones...
