19th Century Dentist's Treadle Drill, by Ss White Dental Manufacturing Co.
About the Item
S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company Treadle Drill, Operational *
USA, circa late 19th century
*Operational means, when the foot pedal is engaged the engine wheel turns, there are no attachments to test, we do not know if the mechanism will do anything more than spin the 'wheel engine'
An intact, very complete (except for drill attachments ) antique dental treadle drill made by the American firm of S.S. White Dental Manufacturing, founded 1872.
This piece is an example of the early mechanically powered drills, which replaced hand drills used previously.
This particular model is believed to be invented in 1871 by American dentist James Beall Morrison (1829-1917) He also designed dental chairs. His drill was popular with dentists throughout Europe and America. It is an example of the first mechanically powered drill.
Mechanics:
To work this mechanically powered drill, the foot pedal is pushed up and down to turn the engine wheel which is the power source. The spring connected to the pedal ensures the flywheel comes to rest in a position where it can be restarted again. It is an example of the first mechanically powered drill which replaced the various hand drills used previously.
Condition Report:
Well cared for antique condition, it appears the drill was originally painted green, it now retains a vintage coat of white paint.
We describe this treadle drill is 'operational' which means, when the foot pedal is engaged the engine wheel turns, there are no attachments to test, so we do not know it the mechanism will do anything more than spin the 'wheel engine'
This is a fantastic example, a great item for anyone involved in dentistry.
