About the Item

Rare mahogany wood binnacle compass. Inside there is a liquid compass mounted on a universal joint signed D. Baker Melrose Mass Pat. 22 Sept 1896 and marketed by the Chas Company. C. Hutchinson Agent 152 State St Boston. Good condition, the light is missing. Cm 30 x 19 H 23. Charles C. Hutchinson served as an apprentice at F.W. Lincoln and Company, nautical instrument makers in Boston. In 1858 Hutchinson became a partner with Lincoln; by 1883 Hutchinson took over the business and renamed it Chas. C. Hutchinson Nautical Instruments, as seller of nautical and surveying instruments, charts, marine glasses, telescopes and flags. It was located at 152 State Street from 1893 until 1932, when it moved to 175 State Street, where they continued business until 1940. The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XVcentury.
