Art Deco Rock-Ola "Loboy" Porcelain Enamel Coin-Op Penny Scale

About the Item

Beginning in the Late 19th Century, the penny scale offered a means for passersby to quickly check their weight without going to the trouble of seeing a doctor; simultaneously - and perhaps more notably - they provided an irresistible opportunity for businesses to advertise and earn extra revenue. Penny scales quickly became a platform for creativity in advertising and design, as machines competed to attract the attention of customers on the street. This scale - the "LoBoy" model - was produced by the jukebox manufacturing company Rock-Ola in the 1930s and features a Classic skyscraper-inspired Art Deco Silhouette in black and white porcelain enamel. The mirrored glass display features instructions ("Stand Still - Keep Clear") as well as a reference chart which provides 'healthy' weights for men and women by height. The scale itself has been modified to function without needing to deposit a coin. This piece would make a super unique and functional addition to any retro bathroom!

  • Antique Columbia Penny Scale, Coin Operated
By Columbia Weighing Machine Company 1
    Located in Peekskill, NY
This is a wonderful piece of Americana! It’s an authentic penny scale that were often used at drug stores during the last part of the 1800s-circa 1920s. It's a large floor model penny scale from circa 1920s. This scale was made by the Columbia Weighing Machine Co. NY. It measures 70 1/2 inches tall by 16 1/2 inches wide and the bottom portion is 27 inches from front to back. Sides are made of wood, the bottom portion where you stand is made of porcelain with mozaic tiles, and there are two mirrored sections on the front of the scale. Scale is in working order but needs an adjustment or I've finally lost a few pounds. The Columbia Weighing Machine Company was founded in Pittsburgh in 1902. Ten years later they moved to the Bronx NY. The company started making coin operated scales...

  • Art Deco French Souvenir Porcelain Trinket Tray
    Located in Devon, England
For your consideration is this delightful early 1930s Art Deco porcelain souvenir tray. Depicting a young girl dressed in a sailors outfit with a large floppy hat on a conch shell and originating from France. Beautifully hand painted with lovely coloring and attention to detail. She has manufacturers number impressed to the back of the shell. She once would of had a paper umbrella much like the ones we use for cocktails today so this could easily be added. These souvenirs were sold in holiday destinations and often as a winnable gift from a local travelling fair. Today these souvenirs are highly collectible and sort after and range vastly in quality. This particular one is above average in it's design and craftsmanship. It's also a very nice size to display or use. This beautiful trinket tray...
