English oak wall-mounted aneroid barometer signed Smiths 1940s

About the Item

aneroid barometer square-shaped wall-mounted English oak wood signed Smiths from the 1940s. Good working condition. Measures 20x20x 5 cm - inche 7.9x7.9x2. The last photo is the gift box. This is an ancient measuring instrument whose pressure-sensitive organ is a metal box called a barometric capsule. The capsule contracts or expands as a result of pressure changes, and its movements are transmitted to an indicating pointer by a mechanical system. The development of this type of barometer was due to Bourdon, a French inventor and industrialist (Paris 1808-1884), who had founded a factory in Paris in 1835 to build steam engines; in 1849 he invented the metal manometer, to which he linked his name, and in 1853 a type of aneroid barometer.
